Stick #51: Exercise Caution (Slightly Unfavorable)
履薄冰兮临深渊，谨慎行来可保全。当前一步一留意，大意从来招祸端。
Plain reading
This lot warns that the hour calls for extra care — like walking on thin ice or standing at the edge of a cliff. Though no great calamity looms yet, a single misstep could bring a fall. Watch every step with care; carelessness is what invites trouble.
Interpretation
This is a slightly unfavorable lot titled "Exercise Caution." You stand as if on thin ice above a deep abyss: no great evil is visible, yet one careless step could mean disaster. The verse's counsel to "watch every step" repeats the warning — the situation is delicate, and you should temper your boldness and let careful conduct preserve your safety.
Situation notes
- Career: Review reports and emails three times before sending; one wrong word can invite harm.
- Relationships: Do not test or suspect in love — a single harsh word can wound the heart.
- Wealth: Postpone large expenses; keeping cash on hand matters more than chasing high returns.
Common misread
Auspicious tiers (such as Slightly Unfavorable) are tone, not a verdict. Name one action you control before redrawing.
Advice
For anything involving money, contracts, or sharp words, spend three extra days checking details rather than skipping them to save time. Each night before sleep, review the day's words and deeds and correct what was wrong.
Drawn from the Book of Songs, "Xiao Min": "Trembling and cautious, as if facing a deep abyss, as if treading on thin ice." The Zhou people used this to govern with vigilance — only by guarding against complacency in peace can one endure.
